Hormone Problems in Cats

Cats are sometimes afflicted by hormonal imbalances, and these can lead to significant illness. Hormones are released from many different glands around the body, and serve many purposes.

Some common hormones include:

Thyroid hormones: These play a key role in control of metabolic rate. Their effects are widespread. Dogs most frequently get a shortage (hypothyroidism) while cats most commonly develop excess thyroid hormones (hyperthyroidism).

Insulin : The control of metabolism is complex-- insulin plays a key role. Though we think mostly about the roleit plays in control of blood sugar, this hormone also has key effects on total metabolism. Diabetes mellitus results either when insufficient insulin is produced, or the target tissues stop recognizing it. The latter is much more common in cats.

Other hormones control water balance, stress response, reproduction, red blood cell production, digestion and other key body functions. Though they also can be out of balance (excess or shortage), these conditions are less common.
